Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has flagged off its 2025 Safety Week, with a call for improved safety practices across workplaces and homes to reduce risks and strengthen emergency preparedness.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Abuja, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, emphasized the importance of building a safety-first mindset within the Commission and among the wider public.
Oseni said, “Let me emphasize that this drill is not just an exercise; it is an important reminder that emergencies do not give prior notice. Therefore, our knowledge, practice, and coordination are our first lines of defence in protecting ourselves and one another.”
Earlier, NERC Commissioner for Corporate Services, Nathan Shatti, noted that safety is a continuous and proactive obligation for every staff member of the Commission.
“Each day you come to this office, there are certain safety precautions and safety awareness that you should have. And so this programme is a reminder for everyone to know that it is not just about talking about safety but doing safety.”
Also, Representing the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Head of Abuja Operations Office, Mr. Zakari Abubakar, delivered a keynote address highlighting the economic and health benefits of prioritizing safety.
“Prioritizing safety reduces the risks of injuries, fatalities, and illnesses while promoting economic development,” Abubakar said, urging all stakeholders to maintain the highest safety standards at work and at home.
Also speaking, the Acting Managing Director of Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, NBET, Mr. Johnson Akinnawo, reminded participants of the inherent risks associated with electricity.
“Electricity is a good servant but a bad master. I urge everyone to take this exercise seriously and internalize the safety protocols.”
Highlights of the event include presentations and practical demonstrations on emergency evacuation, fire safety, building emergency readiness, first aid response, and home and workplace security measures.
The 2025 edition of Safety Week is part of NERC’s ongoing commitment to embed a safety culture within Nigeria’s power sector regulatory ecosystem.
