Port Harcourt — In a bid to strengthen the operational capacity of electricity distribution companies, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has commenced a specialized training for Discos on the Multi Year Tariff Order, MYTO, the framework used for setting electricity tariffs in the country.

The training which began with officials of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC and Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC, aims to deepen the understanding of the MYTO methodology and improve transparency, efficiency, and regulatory compliance within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

Speaking at the opening session, NERC’s Deputy General Manager, Market Competition and Rates, Mr. Abba Terab, said the initiative would not only build capacity but also foster collaboration between the regulator and operators on tariff-setting mechanisms.

“This training is an opportunity to re-strengthen your capacity on the workings of the MYTO model. We believe that a better understanding of the tariff framework will improve operational decisions and service delivery,” Terab stated.

He added that the session would also serve as a platform for gathering practical insights from industry stakeholders.

“It is also a forum for suggestions that can enrich the procedures for the periodic review of MYTO, in line with market realities and consumer needs,” he noted.

The MYTO provides a consistent methodology for electricity pricing, taking into account factors such as inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and generation capacity. It serves as the backbone of tariff regulation in Nigeria’s electricity market.

Participants from AEDC and YEDC expressed optimism that the training would help align their operations more closely with regulatory expectations and improve service delivery to customers across their coverage areas.

NERC also reiterated its commitment to continuous engagement with industry players to ensure a stable, transparent, and consumer-friendly electricity market.
