17 July 2013, Abuja – A briquettes machine that can process rice husk, groundnut pellets, saw dust into fine heating and cooking material has been introduced into the Nigerian market by Women Environmental Programme, WEP, a nongovernmental organisation.
The organisation’s objective is to promote environment conservation, housing and urban development.
Speaking at the unveiling of the machine in Abuja, WEP Executive Director, Ms Priscilla Achakpa said that the machine was conceived with the aim of generating alternative cooking materials for domestic use and to help reduce heavy reliance of Nigerians on fire wood.
She said that felling of tress is hazardous to the environment, leading to the introduction of the machine which is available at an affordable cost. She added, “It burns slowly but is effective, efficient and environmental friendly.”
