Port Harcourt — Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has called on the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to prioritize investments in the blue economy as a catalyst for unlocking over half of Nigeria’s $1 trillion economic target.

Speaking at the NDDC’s 25th anniversary in Port Harcourt during the weekend, Ibas urged a strategic shift from traditional infrastructure to sustainable ventures that harness the region’s vast coastal resources.

He urged the Commission to go beyond traditional infrastructure and embrace investments in skill acquisition, sports development, and the blue economy, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“By harnessing the blue economy, the Niger Delta can catalyze over half of Nigeria’s $1 trillion economic target. We must shift focus from just roads and bridges to sustainable ventures that drive prosperity,” he said.

Commenting on recent acts of sabotage in the region, Ibas condemned the destruction of public assets, describing it as self-defeating.

“Destroying national infrastructure cannot be a means of settling scores with the government, because we are also destroying our lives,” he warned.

The retired Naval Chief further emphasized on the importance of deeper strategic collaboration between the Commission and host governments, warning against duplication of efforts.

“As host to the NDDC headquarters and a principal stakeholder, Rivers State cherishes this partnership. We must now deepen collaboration to avoid duplication, maximize impact, and ensure our people truly benefit from deployed resources,” Ibas stated.
