Port Harcourt — In a significant move to address climate change, Nigeria’s Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, has affirmed the country’s commitment to reducing methane emissions, aiming for total abatement.
Ekpo made the pledge while hosting a delegation from the US State Department’s Bureau of Energy Resources, ENR, at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.
The delegation, led by Robert Leahman, Global Methane Programme Manager, discussed strategies to establish methane emission baselines within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, a crucial step toward reducing the country’s methane footprint.
“Nigeria is dedicated to minimising methane emissions. We’re working tirelessly to achieve our net-zero targets,” Ekpo said.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s methane reduction strategy includes, implementing leak detection and repair measures, utilizing high destruction efficiency flares and controlling venting devices.
The country aims to reduce methane emissions by 60 percent and achieve net-zero by 2060.
