30 March 2016, Abuja –   The trade volume between Nigeria and China has hit N2.9 trillion.

tradeThis was revealed during a courtesy visit by the Chinese ambassador  to Nigeria, Xiaojie Gu, to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu in Abuja.

According to the envoy, the latest  trade volume was recorded as at the  end of 2015. Ambassador Gu, who described Nigeria as China’s third biggest trading partner in Africa, said that Nigeria is the second biggest market in terms of export  in Africa.

He indicated increased China interest in investments and co-operation in the areas of agriculture, mining and infrastructural development and expressed optimism that the trade volume between the two countries would be enhanced  against the backdrop that Nigeria is currently diversifying her economy.

He further explained that Nigeria and China have been working assiduously to implement infrastructural projects in the country, particularly in the airport terminals.

He noted that Chinese companies had been executing the extension of four airport terminals in Nigeria, saying that Chinese government had approached China Exim Bank for the provision of infrastructural and concessionary loans to Nigeria.

In his response, Dr.Onu, pledged to honour all the agreements reached by Nigeria and China during his last visit to China, early in the year, which he said  was fruitful.

Dr. Onu expressed the willingness of the Federal Government to work closely with Chinese government in the use of Science and Technology for the overall development of the country.
