Lagos — The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has once again garnered international acclaim for its groundbreaking efforts in border security and trade facilitation. At the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar, Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, presented the Service’s achievements in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders while promoting trade efficiency.
In his keynote address, titled “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example,” Adeniyi explained the critical role of border management in national security and described borders as gateways that not only protect citizens but also foster economic stability and national security.
Adeniyi underscored the transformative impact of the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, describing it as a legislative milestone that has empowered the NCS to address evolving security challenges.
Highlighting the Service’s achievements, he noted that in 2024, under his leadership, the NCS generated a record-breaking ₦5.1 trillion in revenue—a testament to innovative technology deployment and enhanced compliance frameworks.
“Our achievements go beyond revenue figures; they reflect the efficiency, resilience, and dedication of our workforce,” Adeniyi remarked, adding that strengthened partnerships with domestic and international stakeholders have been instrumental in driving these successes.
Strengthening Border Security
Through intelligence-driven operations, the NCS has achieved remarkable results in curbing illicit activities. CGC Adeniyi detailed the interception of arms shipments, including 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition at the Onne Seaport, disrupting the proliferation of small arms and light weapons—a persistent threat to national security.
Collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has also led to numerous seizures of illicit drugs. Additionally, the Service has taken a strong stand against wildlife trafficking, intercepting 4,200 kilograms of pangolin scales and ivory, demonstrating its commitment to biodiversity conservation and adherence to international agreements.
Tackling Smuggling and Economic Sabotage
In the fight against economic saboteurs, Adeniyi highlighted the success of Operation Whirlwind, which, in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), resulted in the interception of over 695,000 liters of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Leveraging advanced geospatial technologies, such as satellite feeds and geo-mapping, the NCS has significantly enhanced surveillance and enforcement capabilities, ensuring that these operations are both effective and sustainable.
Global Recognition
The NCS’s dedication to innovation, efficiency, and resilience has not gone unnoticed. The Service received a prestigious international award at the conference, cementing its reputation as a leader in border security and trade facilitation across Africa and beyond.
With the transformative leadership of CGC Adeniyi and the strategic implementation of the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, the NCS continues to set new benchmarks in securing borders, fostering economic growth, and contributing to global security initiatives.
