Dublin, Ireland — Nigeria earned N12.076 trillion from the export of natural gas and other gas products in nine months, between January and September 2025, according to recent data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS, in its Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics for the third quarter of 2025, stated that the amount earned from gas exports in nine-month period of 2025 was 32.72 per cent higher when compared with N9.099 trillion earned from the export of the same commodities in the same nine-month period in 2024.
The NBS listed the affected products as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other petroleum gases.
Giving a breakdown of the sum on a quarterly basis, the NBS stated that in the first quarter of 2025, the country earned N3.879 trillion from gas exports, while in the second and third quarters of 2025, N4.879 trillion and N3.318 trillion, respectively, were earned from gas exports.
In comparison, the NBS noted that N1.862 trillion, N2.881 trillion and N4.356 trillion were earned from gas exports in the first, second and third quarters of 2024, respectively.
In the third quarter of 2025, the NBS stated that natural gas export stood at N1.611 trillion, accounting for 7.06 per cent of total exports in the quarter; other petroleum gas export earnings stood at N1.472 trillion, accounting for 6.45 per cent of total exports, while LPG export fetched the country N235.268 billion, accounting for 1.03 per cent of total exports.
The statistical agency further stated that India purchased N833.197 billion worth of Nigeria’s other petroleum gases, and N152.87 billion worth of Nigeria’s natural gas in the third quarter of 2025; while Nigeria exported natural gas and other petroleum gases, valued at N152.874 billion, and N99.446 billion, respectively, to Spain.
France purchased N160.538 billion and N113.399 billion of natural gas and other petroleum gas, respectively, from Nigeria in the third quarter of 2025, while LPG, valued at N99.663 billion was exported to The Netherlands in the third quarter of 2025.
In addition, the NBS disclosed that N10.668 billion worth of liquefied petroleum gas was exported to countries in West Africa.
In general, the NBS stated that Nigeria’s total merchandise trade stood at N38.937 trillion in the third quarter of 2025, representing an increase of 8.71 per cent, compared with N35.818 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2024 and an increase by 2.36 per cent compared with N38.038 trillion recorded in the preceding quarter.
It added that in the quarter under review, exports accounted for 58.59 per cent of total trade with N22.814 trillion, showing an increase of 11.08 per cent over the N20.537 trillion recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2024, and by 0.28 per cent compared with N22.751 trillion recorded in the second quarter of 2025.
