Port Harcourt — Nigeria is repositioning its foreign partnerships as it deepens economic reforms, with Türkiye emerging as a strategic ally in the country’s push for industrialisation, security stabilisation, trade diversification and technology transfer.
Presidential aide, Mr. Sunday Dare, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s engagement with Türkiye is driven by the need for partners that go beyond transactional relationships to build enduring systems that support Nigeria’s long-term development agenda.
“The President is visiting with the mindset that Nigeria’s reform trajectory requires partners who do not merely sell products, but build systems,” Dare said.
According to him, Türkiye offers Nigeria four strategic advantages that align with the administration’s economic and security priorities.
On industrial capacity, Dare noted that Türkiye stands out as one of the most industrialised economies straddling emerging and developed markets, with strengths spanning construction, defence manufacturing, textiles, energy equipment and rail systems.
“Türkiye’s industrial capability fits directly into Nigeria’s industrialisation drive,” he said, adding that the focus is on productive capacity rather than import dependence.
Dare also highlighted Türkiye’s growing influence in defence and security manufacturing, describing it as a global supplier of affordable and battle-tested military platforms.
“From drones and armoured vehicles to surveillance systems, Türkiye’s defence depth is about capacity, not dependency,” he said, noting that the partnership is particularly relevant as Nigeria confronts insurgency, banditry and transnational crime.
On trade, Dare said Türkiye’s engagement with Africa reflects the kind of economic model Nigeria is now prioritising, local production, infrastructure delivery and joint ventures.
“Türkiye is among the world’s leading exporters to Africa, and its trade model aligns with Nigeria’s push for value creation and shared growth,” he stated.
He further pointed to Türkiye’s geopolitical positioning as a strategic advantage for Nigeria, describing the country as a bridge across regions and interests.
“As a NATO member with strong ties across Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Türkiye offers Nigeria strategic flexibility,” Dare said.
“This is not alignment by ideology, but cooperation by interest.”
