27 April 2015 – The Federal Government is seeking for more embedded power plants scattered across the country to check the alarming poor electricity supply. The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, made this known yesterday while signing a pact with two investors, Winners Power Gardens Ltd and Alphamax Consortium who are working on a 20 megawatts (mw) hydro plant in Kogi State and the provision of transmission infrastructure. In a statement from the ministry, Nebo said government is determined to accelerate access to power for both domestic and industrial uses, noting that embedded power generation was one of the most vital ways of solving the nation’s electricity problem. According to him, the production of 20mw each of power, spread across 50 sites across the country, will contribute immensely in alleviating the power challenges of the nation, as it would be easier, cheaper and quicker to harness as against the setting up of a 400mw-500mw capacity plant in terms of time, space and cost. While he described the venture as a proactive means of solving the obvious acute electricity supply problem, Nebo urged the firms to work towards getting the necessary licenses to ensure smooth take-off. Attributing the present challenges of the transmission network to long years of dilapidated infrastructure, Nebo charged Alphamax Consortium to take a careful look at the advert placements of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) with a view to keying into areas where their proposed projects will be most required. Speaking on behalf of the groups, Dr. Jacob Abdullahi pledged both companies’ commitment to the realization of the projects on schedule. *Simon Echewofun Sunday – Daily Independent
