09 January 2013, Sweetcrude, Abuja – Nigeria’s Ministry of Power on Wednesday said it plans to achieve 10,000mw electricity generation by last quarter of 2013.
Hajia Zainab Kuchi, the Minister of State for Power, said this at a Media Training Workshop held in Abuja by the Ministry for power sector correspondents.
“The work plans and goals of the Ministry of power in 2013 include to diversify the energy mix such as Renewable energy, scaling up of rural access to electricity and to stimulate investment in the sector.
“We intend to source ways of funding power transmission, develop projects outside the budgetary provisions and foster bilateral relations.
“The Ministry will also focus on the development of new policy initiatives in order to address post privatisation challenges,” she said.
Kuchi, who was represented by Mrs Grace Papka, Director of Human Resources in the ministry, said that the Presidential Action Committee on Power, PACP, focused on the presidential directives.
She listed the directives to include strengthening of its operations, setting of targets for generation, transmission and distribution sub-sectors.
She explained that the average generation capacity of the power sector as at Dec. 2012 was 6442mw.
Kuchi added that power peak of 4517.6mw was recorded on Dec. 23, 2012, with the 450mw added to the generation capacity in the last quarter of the year.
She said that the Ministry also signed performance contract between it and the Federal Government, agencies and commissions under it.
The signing of the contract was to prepare the sector for post privatisation in order to ensure effective management and optimum service delivery, she said.
