29 May 2013, Sweetcrude, Calabar – Construction work at the 561 Megawatts, Mw, Independent Power Plant, IPP, located at Odukpani in Cross Rivers State is completed and ready for start up in pursuit of the government’s directive that all IPPs under construction be completed this year.
Mr. Rotimi Onanuga, the Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, made the disclosure while speaking at a 3-day retreat of the company held at the Tinapa Lakeside Hotel.
“Everything about this project is completed. What is left is its commissioning. The vice-president had directed that all IPP projects under construction for some years now be completed this year. We have complied in our zone.
“To meet the expectations of Mr. President and Nigerians generally, we need to know where we are, where we are going and how to get there. This retreat is organised to brainstorm on these issues and how to tackle them.
“We are looking at the challenges of our zone (Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa States) and how to solve them. Our major concern is how to improve power supply,” he said.
Onanuga noted that the electricity industry in Nigeria was undergoing transition, adding that to meet the expectations of the government and Nigerians, there must be efficiency in power generation, distribution and supply.
