16 January 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended street protests and rallies just as it asks Nigerians to sit at home in continuation of its strike action.
In a statement by NLC Acting Secretary General, Owei Lamkemfa, said the suspension of street protests is imperative due to escalating violence and increased in security challenges.
His words: “In view of escalating violence, in order to eliminate casualties, and due to the increased in security challenges, Congress has directed that rallies and street protests be stopped across the states and the FCT.”
After a week-long of strikes, rallies, street protests and weekend’s failed talks with labour, President Goodluck Jonathan, in a nationwide broadcast this morning, announced new pump price for petrol, saying the product will now sell at N97 per litre.
He also promised a detailed study of the forensic audit of the account of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with a view to curbing corruption in the oil and gas sector of the economy so as to rid it of corruption.
