24 July 2017, Sweetcrude, Lagos — Our investigation has shown that Nigeria’s power Grid can now carry 6,200 megawatts as against 5000MW.
A reliable source close to the situation, told this Newspaper that the Grid has been misunderstood over the years by past administrators, who have said one of the problems of generation companies is because the grid can carry only 5,000 MW.
“I will correct this unchanging opinion first by stating that under the Buhari Administration, the Grid has expanded to 6,200 MW and not 5000MW as believed”, he said.
Sweetcrude Reports learnt that some projects were completed for the expansion of the grid.
Power projects that were completed include transmission stations in places like Ikot Ekepene, Okada, Alagbon, Ajah, Katampe, Sokoto.
The Federal Ministry of Power has also awarded much more in places like Damboa, Pankshin, Osogbo, Kumbotso, Odogunyan to mention a few.
Work has also been completed at the Kukwaba sub station in Abuja, Increased transformer capacity at Ajah sub station in Lagos, and the Mayo Belwa sub station in Adamawa.
The logic, therefore, is that, if projects to expand the Grid are being completed and new ones started, “it is either ignorance or mischief to continue to argue that the Grid cannot wheel more than 5,000 MW”, our source said.
“The correct, informed and the sensible view is that the Grid is dynamic and must grow as power production grows”, he added.
