23 May 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – Power supply in Nigeria will be boosted by as much as 1,000 megawatts before the end of this year, going by indications by Mr. James Olotu, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, operators of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).
Olotu said the NIPP, comprising 10 power stations, gas infrastructure projects and various distribution and transmission infrastructure, will inject a minimum of 1,000 megawatts into the national grid by December this year.
Olotu, who disclosed this on Tuesday while conducting journalists round some of the completed NIPP projects, including three injection sub-stations in Lagos, said at least two newly-completed NIPP projects would be inaugurated monthly across the country from now till December.
According to him, few contractors, whose pace of work and quality of work were below expectation had been
identified, but he said Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who is the chairman of the NIPP, had given the affected contractors one month ultimatum to make significant progress or face sanction.
“We have identified a few whose performances are below expectations, but my chairman has given them up to June to make significant progress or face sanction. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to other contractors whose pace is lower than expected and whose quality is lower than expected to go back to site and make significant progress,” he said.
Olotu stated that subject to the availability of gas supply, the NIPP would inject at least 1,000mw to the national grid by December, adding that the turbines were coming on stream.
