Port Harcourt — The Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, has commenced investigations into the issue of dead fishes around its facilities on Bonny Island, Rivers State.
SweetcrudeReports had reported of dead fishes of different species littering the shores of a creek lying between a jetty operated by the Nigeria LNG Limited and Shell Nigeria’s Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal, with wild birds feasting on the carnage.
Although the cause of the dead fishes has not yet been ascertained, oil sheens and chemical compounds were seen on the water, while some organisations in Bonny have obtained water samples in the area for forensic examination.
Reacting on the development, the management of NLNG said the company remained committed to a safe and responsible operations in line with global best practices.
NLNG General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mr Andy Odeh, called for calm over the issue, assuring that investigations were already ongoing to unravel the cause of the dead fishes.
Odeh said: “Our attention has been drawn to reports of dead fish along a canal between our Bonny facility and a nearby facility. NLNG is deeply concerned about these reports, and investigations into the cause and water content have since commenced.
“NLNG is also communicating with neighbouring facility owners and other stakeholders to ascertain the likely cause of the incident. NLNG calls for calm as investigations are ongoing, and the outcomes are being awaited for proper evaluation.
“The safety and well-being of its host community and the environment is a top priority for NLNG. It remains committed to operating safely as a responsible corporate citizen and in accordance with global environmental safety standards.”
