2 December 2011, Sweetcrude, PORT HARCOURT— The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says Nigeria could generate 40,000 megawatts of power when it realises the needed gas supply to boost power generation.

Group Managing Director of the corporation, Mr. Augusten Oniwon, who made the observation in Port Harcourt at the 8th induction/anniversary ceremony of the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), Warri, said the Federal Government was already taking steps to increase gas supply in the country.

Oniwon, who spoke through the Group Executive Director, Exploration and Production, Mr. Andy Yakubu said sustainable and increased gas supply was a major factor in power distribution.

He said: ‘’This idea has made the Federal Government to step up its investment in the production and transmission of gas.

’’That is a giant step on the power initiative on gas by the Federal Government. Gas is our major wealth in Nigeria and there is a deliberate policy to grow our capacity.”
