Umuahia — The NNPC, Total Upstream and partners have commissioned a model secondary school at the community secondary school old Umuahia in Abia State.
While speaking to mark the commissioning the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Total Upstream Nigeria Limited, Mike Sangster, who was represented by the sales executive of Total in Abia State, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoye noted that the project was born out of the need to provide qualitative technical education in line with the United Nations sustainable goals
stressing that the location of the project was carefully chosen for maximum impact.
Also speaking, the Group General Manager, NAPIMS, Bala Wunti, represented by Bumi Lawson, noted that the construction of the model secondary school at the community secondary school Umuahia is in furtherance of the corporate social responsibility initiatives of the Nigerian government through the oil and gas sector.
Bumi said the school is fully equipped with model facilities.
The project manager Somto Mbamalu said the massive structure comes with all the rudiments of a complete school and sits on 7,000m² consisting of two buildings-an administrative block consisting of well laid out, equipped and furnished offices for the principal, vice principal, secretary as well as teachers, a sick bay and storage facilities.
Others include 2 main school blocks consisting of 12 class rooms fully equipped for 40 students each, 5 state of the art science laboratories, 2 libraries, 1 ICT unit among several other features.
Some community leaders thanked NNPC, Total Upstream and Partners saying that the facility is the best so far in the state. They promised judicious use of the facilities.
The principal of the school, Ugo Agwu said the teachers and students can now heave a sigh of relief having suffered over the years studying in dilapidated class rooms and environment.
She called on the community to brace up and come to the aid of the school by providing adequate security so that the beautiful school will not be vandalized by hoodlums.
The high point of the commissioning was a tour of the facilities by the dignitaries who graced the occasion.
