Port Harcourt — NNPC Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to remain a key player in Africa’s energy transition, pledging to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability as the world moves toward a lower-carbon future.
Speaking at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, ADIPEC 2025, the Executive Vice President, Downstream, Dr. Mumuni Dagazau, said the company is evolving into a fully integrated energy company with long-term resilience and sustainability at its core.
“Decarbonisation is no longer an option but a license to operate,” Dagazau declared during a high-level panel on The Future of Refining.
“We must deliver energy responsibly, balancing cost, energy availability, and environmental performance. For NNPC Limited, success means still being a sustainable, profitable business 20 years from now.”
He emphasized that Africa’s energy story must be anchored on accessibility and development, even as the global industry accelerates toward net-zero goals.
According to him, NNPC Limited’s downstream strategy focuses on modernization, integration, and innovation across its refining and distribution assets, ensuring cleaner fuels, efficient operations, and reduced carbon footprints.
“Our focus is integration, across value chains, across technologies, and across partnerships. The goal is to build resilience while meeting Nigeria’s growing energy demand and supporting industrial development,” Dagazau said.
He noted that the company’s investments in refinery rehabilitation, gas infrastructure, and renewable projects align with Nigeria’s energy transition pathway, which prioritizes gas as the nation’s transition fuel.
“NNPC Limited is not waiting for the future, we are building it. From cleaner fuels to digital refinery operations and carbon management, we are positioning for competitiveness in a decarbonising world,” he added.
Dagazau reaffirmed the company’s long-term vision to become Africa’s most sustainable and profitable energy company, noting that innovation and partnerships remain central to that journey.
“As global momentum for decarbonisation intensifies, we are ensuring that Nigeria’s refining system remains relevant, not just today, but for the next generation,” he concluded.
