07 September 2015, Lagos – Determined to prevent diversion of its generated revenues into private pockets, the management of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has unfolded fresh strategies to curb leakages in the system.
Tagged: “Integrated Revenue Invoicing Management System (RIMS)”, the fresh move is aimed at increasing its revenue and blocking all revenue leakages in the multi-billion Federal Ministry of Transport parasatal.Unfolding RIMS in a stakeholders sensitisation forum in Lagos, the Managing Director of NPA, Alhaji Habib Abdullahi said the move was also aimed lowering operational cost and shorten the time for documentation to boost quick cargo clearance from the nation’s seaports situated at Port Harcourt, Calabar, Lagos, Warri, Onne and Sapele.
The unveiling of RIMS was sequel to the e-payment system put in place by NPA in the first two years he was in office before he was removed by former President Goodluck Jonathan and replaced by his kinsman, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero.
Giving an insight into why RIMS was initiated by his administration, Abdullahi said that the RIMS was introduced to improve efficiency in port operation and reduce the cost of doing business in the nation’s seaports.
The NPA Managing Director who was handling his first major official assignment since he was reinstated by President Muhammdu Buhari said the Electronic Payment System and the Electronic Ship Entry Notice (E-Sen) that were introduced by the NPA in February and September last year, was the first step towards full automation of its processes and procedures.
According to Abdullahi, port operations involve a network of processes and documentations along the chain of activities from the port of loading to the port of destination. Effective coordination of the activities makes the integration of the processes through automation absolutely necessary in order to facilitate seamless operations thereby reducing both cost and time.
Between February and September 2014, NPA introduced the electronic payment system and the electronic ship entry notice (E-Sen) as a first step towards full automation of its processes.
