o7 March 2014, Enugu – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Enugu State Command, on Friday paraded two suspects accused of vandalism of solar power street lights in Enugu.
The suspects allegedly vandalised the lights installed by the Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Chief Festus Ozoemena.
Parading the suspects, the Enugu State Commandant of the corps, Mr Nathaniel Ubong, said they were arrested on March 5 through the assistance of the local government vigilance group while vandalising the installation.
Ubong said the suspect had named those who collaborated with them to commit the crime during interrogation.
He said the suspects confessed that a bus driver usually picked them at their meeting point, Community Primary School, Obbie-Aku, to various destinations for their operations at the rate of N3000 per trip.
He said the suspects also admitted that they vandalised 42 street lights in the area and sold the batteries at the rate of N1,500 each.
The commandant listed the affected communities as Amaugwu, where 30 lights were vandalised in December 2013, Amambugwu and Amadefaku where four each were vandalised in January and Ogbede where three were vandalised.
