05 September 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has denied being on strike.
Reacting Tuesday to fuel scarcity in Abuja and parts of Lagos, the union said its members were not on strike and that they were not responsible for shortage of petroleum products being witnessed in the two cities.
In a statement, NUPENG Acting General Secretary, Mr. Isaac Aberare, said members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch of the union were working but had no products to lift in some depots due to the refusal of some oil marketers to import fuel over non-payment of their subsidy claims.
The union maintained that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, alone cannot meet up with the huge demands of fuel importation in the country and called on the government to intervene on the lingering issues so that the shortage of petroleum products would not spread to other parts of the country.
