Tower Resources rig07 July 2014, News Wiires – The number of rigs drilling in the US rose by one this week, helped by an increase in the Permian basin, for a total of 1874, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

Oil-directed rigs rose by four to total 1562 while gas rigs fell by three for 311 in a short week due to the US Independence Day holiday on 4 July.

The Permian, as has been the case more often than not this year, led the way with six additional rigs, bumping its nation-leading total to 560. That is 95 more than a year ago.

Texas and New Mexico, which comprise the Permian, each gained rigs on the week, with seven new units mobilised in Texas for 896 and two additional rigs in New Mexico for 92.

The Eagle Ford shale in South Texas lost one rig for 213.

The Mississippian in Oklahoma and Kansas gained three rigs to total 80, or eight more than a year ago.

Oklahoma gained a rig and Kansas lost one, for totals of 209 and 29, respectively.

Pennsylvania lost five rigs for 54, as the Marcellus shale slid by three for a total of 79. West Virginia was up two rigs on 27.

The Utica and the state of Ohio were flat on 43 and 41, respectively. The Williston basin was also flat, on 178. Statewide, North Dakota was flat on 171.

California lost three rigs for 45. The Gulf of Mexico lost one rig for 53. Canada gained 73 rigs for 309.
