10 August 2012, Sweetcrude, KANO – POWER Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, workers in Kano State have embarked on an indefinite strike to protest non-payment of their July salary and deduction of 7.5 per cent of their salaries as pension contribution.

The main gate of the company’s headquarters at Post Office Road remains locked as the workers began the strike on Thursday, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

Malam Muhammad Musa, Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees in the state, told newsmen that the strike was in compliance with a directive from its national headquarters.

“We decided to join the strike in order to press for the reversal of the decision taken on the deduction of our salaries,” he said.

Malam Muktari Baffa, Principal Manager, Public Affairs of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, said the deduction was directed by the Federal Ministry of Power.

“The deduction is in compliance with the 2004 Pension Reform Act,” he said.
