Port Harcourt — Nigeria has taken a major step toward domestic clean-energy infrastructure production as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, PI-CNG, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, in China to localise the manufacturing of CNG refuelling systems and electric vehicle, EV, charging infrastructure.
The agreement was signed during a strategic working visit to China led by the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PI-CNG, Barrister Ismaeel Ahmed, with YJT Environment Technology Ltd (You Jie Te), a Chinese clean-energy technology firm.
Under the MoU, both parties will collaborate to establish local manufacturing of integrated CNG refuelling units and EV charging stations in Nigeria, a move aligned with the Federal Government’s clean energy transition and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This partnership is about more than equipment; it is about building Nigerian capacity,” Ahmed said.
“By localising manufacturing, we are creating jobs, transferring technology, reducing import dependence, and accelerating the transition to cleaner, more affordable mobility solutions for Nigerians.”
As part of the visit, the PI-CNG delegation also held engagements with a specialist CNG conversion-kit manufacturer, which has indicated readiness to set up assembly lines in Nigeria.
The initiative is expected to boost local value addition, deepen technical expertise, and fast-track nationwide adoption of compressed natural gas as an alternative automotive fuel.
According to PI-CNG, the localisation drive will lower infrastructure costs, strengthen supply chains, and support Nigeria’s long-term energy security while positioning the country as a regional hub for clean mobility infrastructure.
“The development underscores the Federal Government’s strategy of leveraging international partnerships to drive industrialization, energy transition, and private-sector-led growth, while ensuring that clean-energy investments deliver tangible economic benefits at home,” PI-CNG said.
