18 November 2015, Lagos – Some gun-wielding hoodlums, suspected to be pipeline vandals, on Tuesday went on the rampage on 4th Avenue Road, in FESTAC Town, Lagos State, during which they attempted to rob houses and shops.
Our correspondent learnt that the hoodlums, who arrived in the area at about 6.30am, exchanged gunfire with policemen, who got a tip-off and stormed the scene.
It was gathered that soldiers attached to the OP MESA also assisted the police to subdue the gunmen.
A resident, identified only as Felix, said the gunmen came to vandalise pipelines.
He said, “We began to hear the gunshots around 5am. Before the police arrived at the scene, some soldiers had already started exchanging fire with the hoodlums.
“The soldiers tried to block the two entrances into the avenue during the assault but the hoodlums eventually escaped.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said there was a disturbance in the area, during which policemen were able to foil the attempts made by the gunmen.
He added that no suspect was arrested.
