22 March 2016, Lagos – The South-East chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday expressed optimism that the 10,000 mega watts of electricity target set by President Muhammadu Buhari for the next three years was achievable, insisting that what remained paramount was the patience and support of all Nigerians.
The party noted that barring bureaucratic bottlenecks, a study it carried out had shown that the South-East zone alone could generate 3,000 mega watts within the stipulated time.
Reacting to the statement made by President Buhari during the opening of the National Economic Council retreat on Monday in Abuja, the party noted in a statement by its spokesman in the zone, Osita Okechukwu, that it had become imperative for the incessant power outages across the country to come to an end.
“We appreciate Mr President’s total commitment to put a full stop to the butt of jokes and laughing stock Nigerians make over incessant power cuts, high electricity bills, obsolete power equipment and failure of the electricity privatization exercise.
“It is our candid view that the target is achievable. For instance, given federal, state and local government support and barring bureaucratic bottlenecks, our study shows that the South-East zone alone can generate 3,000 mega watts within the stipulated timeline set by Mr President viz: Enugu Coal – 1,000MW, Ugwoba Gas – 500MW, Oguta Gas – 500MW and Ukwa Gas Axis -1,000MW,” the party noted.
