Lagos — The new thermal power plant, located in Vietnam’s Quang Binh province, will be of vital importance in supplying power to a country with a growing demand, especially in its industrial sector, when it comes on stream in 2025.
With a robust capacity of 1,200MW, this coal-fired facility, spearheaded by EVN and executed by the consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), Hyundai Engineering and Construction (Korea), Construction Corporation No. 1 (Consortium MC – HDEC – CC1), underscores Vietnam’s steadfast commitment to sustainable energy development.
The Quang Trach 1 project, located in Quang Dong commune of Quang Trach district, will generate up to 8.4 billion kWh per year when commissioned in 2025. The 48.6-hectare project is part of the Quang Trach power complex, which will also house the 1.2 GW Quang Trach 2 coal-fired power plant with two ultra-supercritical coal units of 600 MW each. Vietnam’s state-owned Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is responsible for developing the project, with an estimated investment of £1.26 billion ($1.78 billion).
The Quang Trach 1 marine infrastructure will include a coal import port and a 1.27 km-long breakwater. The coal import port will consist of two berths with a capacity of 100,000 deadweight tons. An approach bridge will be built with reinforced concrete girders and pedestals 2 m high and 5.5 m wide.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineering transport and crane rental services, has been entrusted with the logistical maneuvering of this key project for the region. As the main crane contractor, Sarens chose its Demag CC6800 crane model with a lifting capacity of 1250T, the Demag CC1500 crane model with a lifting power of 300T and several smaller cranes, to ensure the smooth execution of the project’s most demanding tasks.
Sarens has entered into a partnership agreement with Lilama 18 to carry out the works with the necessary precision and power. Its fleet also includes two telescopic cranes with a lifting capacity of 60T each and caters to the diverse needs of the project with the necessary precision and safety. Sarens leverages global experience and local expertise to advance the Quang Trach Thermal Power Plant and to benefit the Vietnamese industrial sector.
Truong Nguyen Hoang Tien (Sarens Country Manager in Vietnam) explain: “As we embark on this transformative journey, we invite you to join hands in shaping Vietnam’s energy future. Together, let us forge a legacy of innovation, sustainability and progress that will fuel generations to come.”
Sarens has an extensive presence in the construction sector in Vietnam, especially in the development of energy projects. It has recently worked with PTSC to supply 33 Wind Turbine Jacket Foundations for Greater Changhua 2204 Offshore Wind Farm. They have also worked with Trung Nam in the installation of 1200 MW of wind turbines, in sites such as the Trung Nam Wind Farm Phase 2, located in Ninh Thuan province, or with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to transport and install twelve G114-2.6MW wind turbines in the Dam Nai II Wind Farm which even predate FIT 1 and FIT 2, among other projects.
