    Reps investigates SURE-P implementation

16 November 2012, Sweetcrude, ABUJA – THE Nigerian House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Petroleum Resources, Downstream, Finance, States and Local Government, to investigate the Federal Government’s Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE- P.

On January 1, President Goodluck Jonathan, announced the introduction of the programme following the removal of oil subsidy.

This resolution emanated from a motion by Rep. Haruna Manu on Thursday in Abuja, which was unanimously adopted.

Manu noted that after 10 months of the introduction of the programme, most states and local governments had not put mechanisms in place to ensure judicious use of the money accruing to them.

He alleged that as at August, about N105 billion had accrued to the Federal Government, out of which N8 billion was used to purchase buses for transporters.

The lawmaker said that the introduction of the programme by government was not aimed at causing hardship to Nigerians but to alleviate their sufferings.

According to him, the Kolade-led committee has been unable to carry out some of the key projects expected of it, citing as example the Abuja-Kaduna, Port Harcourt- Makurdi and Jebba-Kano Rail lines.
