27 June 2013, News Wires – One worker was killed and another injured at a drilling site in Trego County, north-west Kansas, according to reports.
The county sheriff’s department told local media that one man was crushed when a derrick basket fell on Monday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man who was in the basket at the time also sustained unspecified injuries and was flown to hospital in a Wichita for treatment.
It was unclear which company operates the well site or what was happening at the time the accident occurred. An investigation is reportedly ongoing with assistance from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
A man who answered the phone at the Trego County Sheriff’s office refused to provide any details or answer any questions and abruptly hung up when contacted.
The rig is owned by Purcell, Oklahoma-based Horizontal Well Drillers. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
