Mkpoikana Udoma 31 August 2016, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt – A call has been made to the Rivers State Government to construct a state-owned Seaport at Bakana, Kalabari Kingdom in Degema Local Government Area of the state.

A community leader in Bakana, Alabo Victor Ibanibo Don-Pedro, made the call in a statement made available to our correspondent in Port Harcourt.

Don-Pedro in the statement explained that the choice for Bakana is imperative owing to its vast landmark and sea linking Port Harcourt sea route to the Bonny Water Channels which is direct to the Atlantic Ocean.

According to him, “the initiative will attract firms to invest in Shipyard ventures, vessel and tug-boats building and maintenance, among others would also attract development to the people of the area and Rivers State in general.”

He reiterated that Bakana as the landlord of Curtain Channel (one of the largest oilfields of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, will attract firms involved in petroleum storage tank farms with the construction of a seaport in the area.

The community leader also noted that the seaport for Bakana would open windows of employment and curb youth restiveness in the state, adding that Bakana is a pipeline-impacted community.
