13 November 2013, News Wires – A subsidiary of petrochemicals company Sasol has secured a permit to carry out exploration in the Durban and Zululand basins off the east coast of South Africa.
Sasol Petroleum International is targeting acreage off Kwazulu-Natal province in the southern end of the Mozambique channel after significant gas discoveries have been made off the northern neighbour, notably in the Rovuma basin.
Managing director Ebbie Haan said the initial three-year permit was the company’s “first operated exploration right licence in South Africa for at least a decade”.
Sasol has already completed 4000 kilometres of a 2D seismic survey covering an area of 5950 kilometres in the permitted acreage with the remainder to be acquired in 2014, after which the data will be analysed.
