Schneider Electric launch RM AirSeT & SM AirSeT pure-air switchgear in West Africa

Lagos — Schneider Electric, the global leader in energy management and automation, launched the RM AirSeT and SM AirSeT medium-voltage (MV) gas-insulated (GIS) pure-air switchgear solutions to the West African marketplace. The SF₆-free switchgear range marks an all-important step forward in West Africa’s efforts towards a decarbonised future.

The RM AirSeT (Ring Main Unit) and SM AirSeT (Modular Switchboard) are engineered to support industries transitioning to greener operations, with tailored optimisation for sectors such as food and beverage (F&B), manufacturing, power distribution, and municipal infrastructure.

It effectively replaces sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) – a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) – with pure air and vacuum interruption, delivering performance coupled with dramatically reduced environmental impact.

“The main driver is climate change; SF₆ is the world’s most potent GHG and just one unit released into the atmosphere is equivalent to 23,500 kilograms of CO₂. That’s why this transition is urgent, and we are proud to bring an alternative, greener solution to West Africa,” says Adebayo Adeniran, Power Systems Offer Manager at Schneider Electric West Africa.

Local impact aligned with global commitment

Today, the European market is accelerating the phase-out of SF₆ equipment under strict climate regulations, Schneider Electric’s rollout of the RM AirSeT and SM AirSeT undoubtedly reflects a strategic, customer-centric approach in West Africa.

The company will initially focus on key partners and end users – including major food and beverage producers – before expanding to broader industrial sectors. “We understand many partners still rely on SF₆-based infrastructure. Our goal is not to disrupt but to transform,” explains Adeniran.

The RM AirSeT and SM AirSeT integrate seamlessly with Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure vendor-agnostic IoT platform, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and enhanced cybersecurity. The switchgear also extends equipment life by up to 30%, reduces unplanned outages, and supports circular economy goals.
