23 April 2014, Lagos – The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) operated Joint Venture has entered a strategic partnership with the Youth Academy of Feyenoord Rotterdam Football Club, one of the biggest football clubs in the Netherlands to help improve the football talents of the 16-year old NNPC/Shell Cup.
Senior SPDC managers are presenting the three-man Feyenoord Rotterdam youth coaching team to the media and other football stakeholders tomorrow morning at the Taslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos Island, venue of the finals of the 16th edition of the championship.
Speaking at a meeting with the team today, Regional Communication Manager Philip Mshelbila said: ‘Building on the many successes of the NNPC/Shell Cup, we have entered this partnership with Feyenoord in demonstration of our commitment to giving values to our youth.
The idea is to see players and coaches from all the schools that qualified for the semi-finals of the championship leave with life changing experiences from this interaction with Feyenoord Rotterdam FC.’
Feyenoord was founded in 1908 and is the first Dutch club to win the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, as well as the UEFA Cup in 2002.
It has so far won 14 Eredivisie titles, 11 KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruijff Shields at home, where it enjoys huge national support. Feyenoord Rotterdam won the title of the best youth academy in the Netherlands for an unprecedented four year in a roll—2010-2013. The football academy has produced players such as Robin van Persie, now playing with Manchester United.
‘We’re excited to be in Nigeria in this partnership with the SPDC JV. We look forward to exciting coaching sessions with students and coaches in the NNPC/Shell Cup this week.” said Gido Vader Feyenoord International Relations Manager.
“Feyenoord Youth Football Academy has a big bank of professional skills to impart to the teams and we believe that they are as eager as we are for this interaction.’
