11 November 2015, News Wires – Statoil has upped its target for carbon dioxide emission cuts off Norway by 50% after nearly reaching a previous goal of 800,000 tonnes by 2020 four years ahead of ti
The revised target has been set at 1.2 million tonnes – equivalent to emissions from about 750,000 cars – as the state-owned operator attributed its success in cutting greenhouse gas discharges to energy efficiency improvements on its offshore installations.
In 2008, industry forum Konkraft set an original goal for 1 million tonnes in reduced CO2 emissions by 2020, of which Statoil’s share was 800,000 tonnes.
Vice president for development and production Norway, Arne Sigve Nylund, said the country was was able to produce oil and gas with half the emissions per unit of output compared to the global average.
Efficiency measures have included export compressor modifications on the Sleipner platform to cut annual emissions by 24,000 tonnes and use of a main turbine generator combined with a steam turbine at the Oseberg field centre to save another 44,000 tonnes per annum.
