Lagos — The mining industry is embracing advanced tunneling and anchoring machines, with patent filings surging from 754 in 2022 to 1,266 in 2023. These innovations are revolutionizing excavation processes by enhancing efficiency, safety, and adaptability to diverse geological conditions, driving productivity and sustainability while addressing the sector’s evolving operational challenges, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest FutureTech Series Report, “Tech Frontiers: The Mining Edition,” reveals that the patent landscape for tunneling and anchoring machine includes over 6,832 total patents filed. This highlights the mining industry’s focus on innovative solutions that drive productivity.

Likith Togita, Senior Disruptive Tech Analyst of Disruptive Tech at GlobalData, comments: “Tunneling and anchoring machines are transforming mining operations by enabling deeper excavations with greater precision. These machines are designed to adapt to the diverse geological conditions, ensuring consistent performance even in the most challenging environments.”

GlobalData’s report offers a detailed analysis of the high-impact innovations across near-term, mid-term, and long-term advancements. Utilizing its proprietary Technology Foresights framework, each innovation is explored in depth, highlighting its drivers, challenges, and applications to advance the mining sector.

Below are a few notable patents by key companies in tunneling and anchoring machines.

Tian Di Science & Technology filed a patent for a high-adaptability digging and anchoring integrated machine with a dual-mode anchor drilling system, designed to improve efficiency in tunneling and anchoring operations by integrating advanced drilling capabilities with enhanced adaptability to varying ground conditions.

Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group filed a patent for a rapid advancement system suitable for coal alleys or semi-coal rock alleys to accelerate tunneling processes with improved safety and operational efficiency in challenging mining conditions.

Sichuan Huayingshan Guangneng Group filed a patent for a large inclining angle fully mechanized hydraulic support anti-tilting and anti-sliding device, designed to enhance stability and safety in steeply inclined mining operations by preventing tilting and sliding of the hydraulic support systems.

Togita concludes: “Despite the numerous benefits, challenges such as ensuring long-term durability, managing maintenance costs, and addressing the complexity of system integration with older machinery remain significant. However, the drive for innovation and the industry’s focus on automation indicate a strong momentum that will shape the future of mining operations.”
