He noted that, “We actually have coal in abundance in Nigeria, and we have decided in this government that we need to take advantage of it to open it up to investors, who are interested and get them to come and site plants near the coal deposits.”

“We feel that in areas where mining is no longer taking place, we really should assist the community and the constituencies to reclaim the land and put it back to use and we are doing it within the limit of resources available to the ministry.”
The Minister stressed the need to learn from Australia, particularly, on mining issues at a time when government is refocusing its attention in line with the downward trend in global commodity prices and in the oil and gas sector.
At a recent event, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has cause to agonise about the fact that Nigeria was missing from the latest Fraser Institute’s report on the global mining industry. He lamented that the country may likely suffer more from the perception or lack thereof as a viable mining destination. According to the minister, perception has been the reality for too long in the country.
