Port Harcourt — The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has expanded power delivery capacity in the South-South with the arrival of a new 150MVA 330/132/33kV transformer at the Afam IV Transmission Substation in Rivers State.
The transformer, delivered on Sunday, is expected to double the substation’s capacity from 120MW to 240MW once installation and commissioning are completed, a major supply boost for Port Harcourt and surrounding industrial clusters.
TCN said the upgrade will significantly improve bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED), enabling the Disco to serve homes, businesses, and industrial customers more reliably.
“This new 150MVA transformer is part of our ongoing capacity expansion programme across the country,” a senior TCN spokesperson Ndidu Mbah. “Once energised, it will increase the wheeling capacity of Afam IV and stabilise voltage levels to the entire Port Harcourt franchise area.”
The company described the installation as a critical intervention to support load growth driven by industrial activities, residential expansion, and increased energy demand across Rivers State.
According to TCN, engineers and contractors have already mobilised to site to begin pre-installation procedures.
“We are working to ensure that the transformer is installed, tested, and put into service within the shortest possible time,” Mbah added.
The Afam IV upgrade aligns with TCN’s broader grid expansion strategy, which includes transformer additions, substation rehabilitation, and new transmission lines intended to eliminate constraints in key load centres.
The company noted that more capacity projects are scheduled for the Port Harcourt region as part of its broader plan to reinforce the grid and ensure more stable power for the South-South.
