Port Harcourt — The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has commissioned two newly installed power transformers at the Alaoji and Apir Transmission Substations, significantly boosting power transmission capacity in Abia, Rivers, Benue, and Taraba States.

At the Alaoji Transmission Substation in Abia State, a new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer was energized lastweek, increasing the substation’s capacity from 750MVA to 850MVA, equivalent to 680MW.

According to TCN, the transformer is equipped with four outgoing 33kV feeders and is expected to enhance bulk electricity delivery to Aba Power Plc, enabling the company to distribute more power within its franchise area, including Aba and parts of Port Harcourt.

“This is a strategic boost that strengthens power supply to key industrial and residential areas in the Southeast and South-South,” the TCN announced on X.

Meanwhile, the Apir Transmission Substation in Benue State also recorded a major upgrade with the commissioning of a 187.5MVA, 330/132/33kV transformer on July 9, 2025, pushing the station’s capacity from 150MVA to 337.5MVA.

The additional capacity allows for increased power evacuation to the Yola and Jos Electricity Distribution Companies, thereby improving electricity supply to customers in Benue and Taraba States.

Both transformer projects are part of the ongoing TCN, World Bank partnership aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, ensuring more efficient and reliable delivery of bulk electricity across the national grid.

“These installations are not only raising substation capacities but also expanding the national transmission footprint,” TCN stated.
