Tullow remains cheerful after plugging Liberia’s Montserrado well

10 November 2011, Sweetcrude, London – UK’s Tullow Oil has announced the Montserrado 1 well offshore Liberia has been plugged and abandoned, but it is upbeat by a non-commercial discovery at the well.

The London and Dublin listed company said the well made “an important exploration breakthrough” by turning up oil in Late Cretaceous reservoir sands.

The test results “establishing a working hydrocarbon system in the Liberian basin”, the company said.

The well was drilled in block LB-15 to a total depth of 5,400 metres and encountered good-quality, water-bearing sands in the main objective.

In a deeper secondary objective, around eight metres of hydrocarbon pay was intersected and a sample of light oil was recovered.

The drillship is now being mobilised to Sierra Leone to drill the Mercury 2 appraisal well and the Jupiter exploration well on block SL-07B-11.

Anadarko Petroleum operates the licence on a 47.5% interest, to Repsol’s 27.5% and Tullow’s 25%.

Tullow Oil exploration director Angus McCoss said the partners had “gained critical insights” into what he termed “highly prospective Liberian acreage” that is slated for follow-up drilling.
