14 August 2013, Kampala – Uganda’s Karuma Hydropower dam is estimated to cost $1.4 billion and constructed by the Chinese company, Sinohydro Corporation. The dam is expected to produce 600MW for Uganda’s national grid.
Speaking on the launching event, President Museveni praised the Chinese for having the technical expertise and money to fund infrastructural projects in Africa.
He also said the finance was provided on favorable terms, and “completely free of the usual meddling and high-handedness of some of the friends from outside”.
President Museveni also praised the Chinese for focusing on “primary sectors of the economy such as infrastructure instead of focusing on secondary sectors of national life”.
Uganda’s demand for electricity is currently increasing by15% annually according to the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company.
