Lagos — The United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, and the Zamfara State Government are exploring a partnership to expand sustainable energy solutions and support the implementation of the Integrated Smart States Programme, ISSP, in the state.
The discussions were held during a strategic scoping meeting at the United Nations House in Abuja, following the recent visit of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to Zamfara.
During the visit, Governor Dauda Lawal highlighted the state’s commitment to sustainable development and explored areas where collaboration with the UNDP could support its development priorities.
The latest meeting was aimed at advancing those discussions and defining practical areas for the implementation of the ISSP, with energy and renewable energy emerging as key components of the proposed partnership.
Under the proposed integrated energy planning framework, the UNDP is expected to support Zamfara in implementing its newly established state electricity policy and regulatory framework.
The partnership will also focus on expanding decentralised energy solutions, including mini-grids and small hydropower projects, particularly in communities that remain underserved by existing electricity infrastructure.
Another priority is the solarisation of public infrastructure, with the state seeking to transition healthcare and educational facilities to cleaner and more reliable electricity.
The discussions also covered electric mobility, with both sides exploring green transport solutions that could support more sustainable urban development in Zamfara.
The state is further considering the establishment of a Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence that would serve as a regional hub for research, skills development and training in green technologies.
Beyond the energy sector, Zamfara plans to use the partnership to support digital transformation and enterprise development, with a focus on ensuring that improved electricity access translates into productive economic opportunities.
The state government said the proposed interventions are expected to particularly support young people and women by linking reliable energy supply with enterprise development and other income-generating activities.
The engagement forms part of Zamfara’s broader effort to use sustainable energy and technology to strengthen public services, expand economic opportunities and support long-term development.
