09 February 2015, Kaduna—National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, NUTGTWN, has in Kaduna, called on the Federal Government to urgently review the privatisation contracts with Generation Companies, GENCOs and Distribution Companies, DISCOs, making it compulsory for them to ensure steady power supply before contemplating any tariff increase.
The union condemned the recent hike in electricity tariff, lamenting that erratic power supply had worsened the crisis in the textile sector.
In a statement by Issa Aremu, General Secretary of NUTGTWN and Chairman, IndustriALL Global Union, Sub Sahara Africa, the union called on President Muhammed Buhari, to urgently revisit the report of the 2014 national conference and implement the wholistic recommendations for the power sector instead of allowing the same unhelpful posting of high tariff by underperforming generating and distribution companies.
The statement read: “The point cannot be overstated; Power/Energy is so strategic to the industrialization and the well-being of the people. Therefore the Federal Government must urgently review the privatisation contracts between the it and Generation Companies, and Distribution Companies, and give a two year time-frame to firms in the Electric Power Sector to allow them stabilize and provide efficient power supply to Nigerians before they can contemplate any tariff increase.”
