18 January 2014, News Wires -The count of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US this week was up to 23 to 1777, the latest data from Houston-based service firm Baker Hughes said.
The tally was up by 15 oil rigs to 1408, up by 92 from a year ago. The number of gas rigs also gained, adding eight to 365, off 64 from the same week in 2013.
Texas led the surge in the rig count, adding 16 units for a total of 841.
Seven of those rigs were in the Permian play, which remained by far the most prolific US basin with a total of 478.
Oklahoma also added three rigs for a total of 186, while Colorado gained two for a count of 61.
New Mexico’s count was down by four to 77.
Losing rigs were the Barnett play, whose count dropped by three to 28, and the Ardmore Woodford, which shed three units to total eight.-
