    US rig count falls by seven

    oil rig15 February 2014, News Wires – The number of oil and gas rigs drilling in the US fell by seven this week for a total of 1764, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

    Gas-directed rigs took the biggest hit, shedding 14 for a total of 337. Oil rigs, on the other hand, were up seven for a total of 1423.

    There were two fewer rigs in the Gulf of Mexico for a total of 52.

    California and Texas were at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of rig movement. The western state gained five rigs to total 36. While Texas lost five rigs, it was still by far the state with the most running units on 840.

    Among basins, the Permian gained the most rigs with three to total 486. The Eagle Ford was flat on 216.

    The Williston basin dropped one unit, bringing the total rig count in the Bakken/Three Forks play to 176.

    The Utica shale play was up two rigs on 43. The Marcellus was down a rig on 80. The Haynesville shale had 42 rigs drilling, one less than a week ago.

    The DJ-Niobrara basin lost two for 53. Among states, Louisiana was a loser with four fewer rigs and a total of 107.

    Oklahoma was down three for 182. New Mexico gained three rigs for 83. Canada’s rig count was up three for 624.
