    US rig count hits 1,771

    Oil production platform and supoort ships Alaska15 April 2013, Houston – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US rose by 33 to reach 1,771 this week.

    Data from Houston-based services giant, Baker Hughes, showed oil-directed rigs shot up by 30 for a weekly total of 1387. Gas rigs were up two for 377.

    Texas gained the most rigs of any state by far, adding 23 for a total of 848. Drillers added seven rigs to the Permian basin in West Texas for a total of about 396. The Eagle Ford in South Texas added six for 300.

    Oklahoma also gained big, adding six for a total of 185. Kansas was down one on 24.

    Louisiana gained one for 107. Arkansas was flat on 15. Mississippi was flat on 10. New Mexico lost one for 80.

    Colorado was flat on 59. Wyoming lost two for 42. Utah was flat on 28. Nevada was flat on three. North Dakota gained four rigs for 178. Montana was flat on 10.

    Pennsylvania lost four for 59. West Virginia gained four for 24. Ohio was up two on 32.

    Illinois added a second rig. California was flat on 39. Alaska gained one for 10.
