Lagos — Saleh Mamman, Minister for Power, has said Nigeria’s power generation is 8000 megawatts (MW) daily as against 4000MW frequently being reported by the media.
Mamman made the clarification on Thursday during a press briefing with journalists.
According to him, the 8,000MW of electricity daily is being delivered through a combination of Grid, Embedded and Industrial Captive supply of electricity.
He alluded the increase to his administration.
The Minister revealed that the federal government has secured and is executing up to $4 billion in investments in the grid to ensure more grid power is delivered to citizens.
“We are working on more firm gas supply contracts for the power sector backed by improved liquidity. These contracts will have stiff financial penalties for underperformance”, he said, adding that the ministry is working to increase energy mix for improved energy security.
As a result, he said his administration is looking to complete the Zungeru Hydro plant, the Katsina Wind plant, Kashimbila Hydro, as well as partnering with the Ministry of Water to ensure the challenges with Gurara are permanently resolved.
“We are also working to resolve issues that have prevented large On-grid Solar from taking off in Nigeria.
“We are re-tooling the System Operator for improved dispatch optimization based on technologies and improved maintenance schedule alignments across generators.
“We are on the path to resolving the financial challenges in the sector and we will continue to provide robust and clear regulation to keep participants such as DISCOs, GENCOs and even TCN in line to deliver for Nigerians”, he added.
