02 October 2015, Nnewi—No fewer than 250 customers of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, at Anazodo street and its environs in Awada Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has taken to the streets in the area to protest against the electricity company.
The electricity consumers took their protest to Awada and Ogidi offices of the EEDC and demanded for their Enugu headquarter’s intervention to the alleged attempt to disconnect electricity consumers in the area from a community-owned transf- ormer to an alleged private one.
The affected Awada community members are Igboamaeze, Anazodo, Aniche and Ndiejezie streets Landlord Association with Mr. Ifeanyi Maduekwe as chairman and Kamsolu Oguka as secretary.
The customers threatened that if the EEDC did not act fast to address the energy crises which included what they called ”over- estimated billing by the EEDC,” the crisis might escalate to fisticuffs and blood-letting.
In a letter by the lawyer to the affected residents of Awada, Mr. Victor Ejide addressed to the General Manager, EEDC, Enugu zonal headquarters which was signed by 11 landlords and property owners, the community alleged that an indigene was bragging that he was authorized by the EEDC to secure and instal his own transformer.
The community also alleged that the person was said to have claimed that the authority bestowed on him, further empowered him to disconnect all the occupants of Anazodo Street and connect same to his private transformer.
“Our clients are, at present, comfortable with the power supply they enjoy. The supply comes from a transformer of superlative cadre purchased and installed by a committee comprising of reputable, responsible, rational and respectable members of the community, wherein our clients reside.
“Our clients duly contributed to the present transformer that supplies power to the street and its environs,” he said.
