27 August 2013, Warri – Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has forestalled plans by Egiegi and other communities in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State to disrupt the ongoing railway line construction works in the area. The company is currently constructing Ajaokuta-Itakpe-Warri railway line.
It was gathered that the communities, which were angered by the damage, destruction and disturbance to their economic livelihood by the company, had alerted the Resident Engineer, Federal Ministry of Transport, Agbor, Engineer Adeniran, about their action, scheduled to commence August 26, but the company immediately swung into action.
A source said a meeting was conveyed to iron out the lingering problems as the communities, represented by Chief Jonathan Ejighobu, complained that the company damaged their timber, fishing materials and disturbed their fishing activities.
The company’s representative, Dr. David Ogane, appealed to the communities not to disrupt the ongoing construction activities, assuring that their comments and demands would be passed to the management for a review.
The communities gave the company up to August 31 to hold a proper dialogue and meet their demands or they would stop further works on the railway project.
