    Electricity theft: Kaduna Electric drags suspect to court

    Kaduna — An suspected electricity thief, Mal. SaifulLah Dan’zumi Musa of No. 2/4, Kinkinau Kaduna has been charged before Kabala Doki Magistrate Court in Kaduna.

    He is, specifically, charged for electricity theft and dishonest diversion of electricity contrary to sections 59(1) and 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code.
    Arraigning the suspect, Police Inspector Ibrahim Usman of the Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences, SIPTEO, disclosed that SaifulLah Dan’zumi Musa connived with his younger brother, Mubarak currently at large, to steal electricity from Kaduna Electric for almost one year.
    The First Information Report stated that ”between 16th October 2020 and 2nd August 2021, you SaifulLah Dan’azumi Musa, male, adult and a Nigerian citizen of No. 2/4, Takum Street, Kinkinau, Kaduna and your younger brother, Mubarak of the same address now at large, in your capacity as Kaduna Electric customers with account number 215120049601 and pre-paid meter No. 58000614295 dishonestly diverted the use of electricity and thus stole 3492 kWh of electricity energy valued at #583,628:99 and thereby committed an offence of criminal conspiracy and electricity theft, contrary to section 59(1) and section 271 of Kaduna State Penal Code 2017”.
    The presiding magistrate, Nahid Ibrahim, adjourned the case to 8th September, 2021 after taking a no guilty plea from the accused person.
    The offences carry a jail term of not more than five years each and a restitution of twice the cost of the item stolen.
